NATO's secretary-general has told a meeting of defence ministers attended by Australia it is important the European Union continue its economic sanctions against Russia.
His remarks come after Italy's new prime minister called for ending the sanctions and as the United States presses its European allies to get more NATO battalions ready for combat.
