Ausgrid have announced the initial 553 jobs to be cut in NSW as nearly one in four Ausgrid workers face the chop over the next six months.

Nearly one in four Ausgrid workers will lose their jobs in the next six months as 1350 jobs are slashed from NSW energy companies.

Some 1100 of those planned job losses will come from Ausgrid.

The first round of redundancies on Wednesday heavily impacted the company's Sydney staff with more than half the 553 jobs from the initial cut falling on the city and its suburbs, according to the Electrical Trades Union.

Ausgrid says the job cuts are a result of directions from the Australian Energy Regulator to reduce costs, but ETU organiser Mark Buttigieg claims "it simply isn't true."
