13-yr-old Eddie takes political spotlight

Eddie - the 13-year-old son of a same-sex couple - took centre stage in an emotional debate about the issue in federal parliament.

Won't somebody think of Eddie.

Same-sex marriage is dominating the political news cycle this week, after Labor introduced a private bill to legalise it and the government released details for a national vote to then maybe do the same.

And there was an extra presence in federal parliament for Tuesday's question time - Eddie, the 13-year-old son of same-sex parents.

Labor wanted the prime minister to explain why Eddie's two mums would be the subject of a $7.5 million taxpayer funded 'no campaign' in a national vote.

The prime minister wanted Labor to stop taking advantage of Eddie's presence to argue that people who didn't know the 13 year old weren't entitled to an opinion.

And the Speaker wanted MPs to stop their boisterous interjecting so Eddie could hear what the politicians were saying about him.

"Eddie has come here to listen to the answer as well," Tony Smith warned the chamber.

Malcolm Turnbull has promised $7.5 million for both sides of the campaign for a plebiscite to be held in February.

Labor fears the lead-up to the national vote will damage same sex couples and their children.

Mr Turnbull promised the plebiscite debate would be respectful and civil and thanked Eddie for visiting with his two mums.

"Eddie will understand that everything we do here in this parliament is designed to ensure that Australia becomes an even better place for him to grow up in and realise his dreams," he told the 13-year-old in the public gallery.

"We respect them, we respect their family and we will respect the love they have for their boy."

Deputy opposition leader Tanya Plibersek earlier spoke to Eddie who asked her why people who barely knew his family could vote on how they live.

The government still needs to win over Labor, the Greens or the crossbench in the Senate to make the national vote a reality.
