17-year-old Russian basketball player dies

A promising young Russian basketball player has died after losing consciousness during a training session.

A 17-year-old Russian basketball player has died after collapsing during practice with league champion CSKA Moscow.

CSKA says Ruslan Gagloev, a promising centre who grew up in Georgia's war-torn breakaway region of South Ossetia, lost consciousness during a training exercise and could not be revived.

The club's head youth coach, Andrei Maltsev, called Gagloev "the most diligent and kind guy on the team, its leader and a man of few words".

The club says Gagloev's teammates on the youth team had carried him off the court for medical help after he collapsed.

According to the team, three crews of emergency medical staff attended to Gagloev using a defibrillator but were unable to revive him.

He was pronounced dead about an hour later.
