200 jobs to go at central Qld mine

A central Queensland coalmine that employs 200 workers will close next year after industry giant Glencore decided not to extend operations at the site.

More jobs are about to go in Queensland's mining industry, with Glencore announcing plans to close its underground coal mine west of Mackay.

The Newlands mine will close at the end of next year after a company investigation determined it would then be no longer viable.

Almost 200 workers will lose their jobs, with the first 50 jobs to go next month when the last longwall panel is established.

Glencore says it will try to redeploy workers.

Last year, 450 jobs were cut in a restructure of Glencore's Newlands and Oaky Creek complexes.
