About 200 skiers have been rescued after they were stranded in chair lifts at a resort in the French Alps.

A gondola car broke down, triggering the incident.

Skiers spent between one and two hours stuck on the gondola, suspended 25 metres above the ground, at the Chamrousse resort.

An official with the prefecture in the eastern Isere region, Violaine Demaret, said rescue personnel were dropped via two helicopters onto the roof of the gondola to open the hatch and pull the skiers out.

Demaret told The Associated Press that the rescue operation was completed by nightfall, without any reports of injuries.
The ski lift was built in 2009 to connect the town of Chamrousse to the summit of the Croix de Chamrousse, 2,250 metres above sea level.
