40-year report must focus on climate costs

The Climate Institute wants Thursday's intergenerational report to outline emissions plans and costs if the globe fails to limit warming to 2C.

The Abbott government's first intergenerational report must outline Australia's pathway to net zero emissions by 2050, a climate lobby group believes.

The government in 2013 agreed to include climate change in the report to analyse the effect of policies on the Australian economy and federal budget.

The Climate Institute believes that section must include projections of emissions to 2055 under legislated policies and a plan to achieve net zero emissions in Australia by 2050.

It also wants estimates of the costs to Australia should the international community fail to meet its goal of limiting global warming to two degrees Celsius.

Climate Institute chief executive John Connor says failure to plan for climate trends would not just result in intergenerational theft but also recklessness.
