The San Francisco 49ers have made some surprise cuts to their roster, but Jarryd Hayne was not a casualty.

The 49ers still have 16 more players to trim before the NFL's Saturday (Sunday 6am AEST) deadline for teams to finalise their 53-man roster.

On Friday the 49ers gave five players their marching orders.

Hayne won't feel safe until after Sunday afternoon AEST's deadline.

Veteran defensive lineman Darnell Dockett, safety Craig Dahl, offensive linemen Joe Looney and Patrick Miller and linebacker Philip Wheeler were cut.

Hayne is expected to make the final 53 after a powerhouse performance in the 49ers' final pre-season game against the San Diego Chargers on Thursday.

The versatile Australian topped the team with 58 bruising rushing yards, caught two punts and showed his rugby league tackling skills as a gunner with the 49ers' punt coverage unit.

For the pre-season, Hayne's statistics were stunning.

Hayne had more rushing yards per carry than any other NFL player - a phenomenal result for a rookie from Sydney who never played the game at an elite level until three weeks ago.

He also finished second in average punt return yardage.

49ers head coach Jim Tomsula would not say after the Chargers' game if Hayne had made it, but reporters covering the 49ers say it's a foregone conclusion.

Showing the cut-throat nature of the NFL, Dockett, a 34-year-old three-time Pro Bowl selection, had recently signed a two-year $US7.25 million ($A10.34 million) contract with the 49ers.

About $US2 million was guaranteed.
