4G network reaches 85% of Aussies: Telstra

Telstra says it has achieved its target of reaching 85 per cent of Australians with its 4G network by Christmas.

Telstra claims to have reached its goal of covering 85 per cent of Australians with its 4G mobile internet network by Christmas.

The telco set the target in June, at which point its 4G network reached 66 per cent of the population.

It has since upgraded 1500 base stations which transmit signals on the slower 3G network, tripling the number of regional towns covered by its 4G network to more than 300.

The expansion means Telstra now has more than four times the 4G coverage of any other telco said Max Jennings, who directs the company's wireless network engineering.

He said the addition of 4G coverage in regional holiday spots would ease network congestion over Christmas.

But he said the influx of visitors means some users may still face slow internet speeds at peak times.
