The Queensland government has offered a $50,000 grant to give blind access to hi-tech equipment, including a cane that uses sonar.

The Queensland government has awarded a $50,000 grant to help visually-impaired residents with new technology.

The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association will spend the $50,245 grant on 25 ultra canes and 25 trekker breezes - electronic mobility aids that help blind people travel safely.

"(The ultra cane) is basically a hi-tech cane that uses sonar to give their user notice of obstacles that are coming up," Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said.
