$500m for regional jobs in Vic budget

Helping regional communities create jobs is central to the state government's plan for Victoria.

The 2015-16 state budget has allocated $500 million for the Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund, including $200 million for job creation in established and emerging industries.

Geelong automotive workers facing an uncertain future will get $7.5 million as part of the Geelong Regional Innovation and Investment Fund.

In a family-focused budget, 21 government and four independent schools in regional Victoria will be upgraded, renovated or refurbished.

Two regional TAFE campuses will be re-established as part of a $300 million TAFE Rescue Fund while four new regional tech schools will be created.

Investment in regional roads includes $86.7 million to resurface crumbling road surfaces and $75.8 million for bridge strengthening works on key freight routes across the state.

Rail is the biggest transport winner with $220 million for the Murray Basin Rail Project, for which a business case is expected to be finalised in the coming months.

Regional sport gets $70 million for renovations at Geelong's Simonds Stadium and $31.5 million to upgrade Eureka Stadium in Ballarat.
