549 jobs lost through DFAT AusAid merger

The secretary of the department of foreign affairs says 549 positions have been lost through its merger with AusAid, with no forced redundancies.

More than 500 jobs have been lost since the merger of AusAid and the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Of the 549 positions cut, 465 were in Australia and 84 overseas, department secretary Peter Varghese told a Senate committee in Canberra on Wednesday.

Voluntary redundancies made up 410, with the rest coming through natural attrition.

Meanwhile, the department will spend $21 million by the end of the year on integrating its computer system with AusAid's.

The hearing was told $850,000 was spent on consultant fees.

Mr Varghese said the department didn't know what to expect when it started the job.
