65,000 sign offshore detention petition

The Greens have tabled a petition with 65,000 signatures calling for the immediate closure of offshore detention centres on Nauru and Manus Island.

More than 65,000 Australians have signed a petition to shut down offshore asylum seeker detention centres in Nauru and Papua New Guinea.

Australian Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young on Tuesday tabled in the Senate a petition that calls for the immediate closure of the Nauru and Manus Island centres which have been criticised by human rights groups.

It follows a similar petition organised by GetUp last year which attracted more than 100,000 signatures.
