General insurance giant Insurance Australia Group has received about 700 claims related to damage from Cyclone Marcia, and more are expected as people return to their homes and businesses.

Around 90 per cent of the claims are from customers in Queensland and northern NSW, where properties were severely damaged by heavy rain and high winds.

Chief executive Mike Wilkins says it is too early to estimate the full financial impact of the damage on the insurer, whose brands include NRMA Insurance, CGU, WFI and Coles.
