A banner welcome for refugees

As the major political parties scramble to portray themselves as having the toughest asylum seeker policy, one Melbourne landmark is proclaiming a different message.

St Paul's Cathedral, on the corner of Swanston and Flinders Streets, has erected a seven-metre high banner on one of its spires saying "Let's Fully Welcome Refugees".

The Anglican Church says the major parties are custodians of Australia's record as a compassionate nation towards refugees, and in the lead-up to the election they should be detailing what it calls the unambiguous policies of a civilised nation.

Dean of Melbourne, Dr Andreas Loewe explained to Andrea Nierhoff why the welcome banner has been erected.
