A chat with Gerry Harvey

Harvey Norman chairman Gerry Harvey talks to SBS about claims his furniture chain is destroying Aussie forests, and about the state of the retail sector.

Gerry Harvey has hit back at non- government organisations Markets for Change and GetUp! for singling Harvey Norman out as a key culprit for the destruction of Australia's forests.

Markets for Change say Harvey Norman is selling products made from Australian native timber, shipped and manufactured in China, then sold in Australia.

A television campaign devised by GetUp! targeting Harvey Norman has been refused classification, effectively banning it from television broadcast, which if it did, Gerry Harvey says, may take legal action.

Gerry Harvey spoke to Ricardo Goncalves about the row.

RETAIL

Harvey went on to talk about Australia's retail sector, which he warns is suffering despite the mining boom propping up the economy.

He says it's too hard to agree with economic commentator Robert Gottliebson, who said last week that it may be time to start considering interest rate cuts if a high inflation figure comes out later this month.

But with regard to Aussie Home Loans' John Symond's comments last week, he disagrees. Harvey says that Australia won't fall into recession if we see another two more interest rate rises.
