A horror 72 hours on NSW roads

Police are calling for drivers, motorcyclists, passengers and pedestrians to take greater care on NSW roads after 10 deaths in three days.

NSW has suffered a horror 72 hours on its roads with 10 deaths, including a 15-year-old girl in a car accident.

The girl was one of three teenagers in a car that slammed into a tree at Port Kembla in the Illawarra region early on Monday.

Her death is one of 10 in the past three days, police said.

The 19-year-old male driver is fighting for his life in hospital, while a 17-year-old male passenger remains in a serious condition.

Police believe speed may have been a factor in the crash.

Meanwhile on Sydney's north shore, a 71-year-old man was killed on Monday morning after being struck by a cement truck in Gordon.

Assistant Commissioner Hartley said while each of the fatal incidents remain under investigation, all road users needed to be more responsible.

"Speed, fatigue, drink or drug driving, failing to use controlled crossing areas, being unlicensed, not wearing helmets, using defective vehicles, are all key elements in these crashes, which are costing lives," he said in a statement.

The number of deaths is 18 up from last year and include pedestrians, motorcycle riders, passengers and drivers.
