A look at the 10 players on the NRL's short list for the next induction of the Immortals later this year.

A look at the 10 players on the NRL's short list to be the next Immortal.

* DALLY MESSENGER (1908-13)

Known as "The Master" his defection from rugby union kick-started the 13-man code in Australia in 1908. He was peerless in his day as an attacker and goal-kicker.

* FRANK BURGE (1911-23, 1925-27)

A man ahead of his time, he was a prolific try-scoring forward. His eight tries for Glebe against University in 1920 is a league record that stands to this day.

* DAVID BROWN (1930-41)

Dominated the 1930s and was referred to as the "Bradman of league". Set a host of point-scoring records, won two premierships with Easts and captained Australia at just 22.

* BRIAN BEVAN (1942, 1946-64)

Played for Eastern Suburbs before departing for England where he became a sensation for Blackpool and Warrington, scoring 757 tries in 662 games.

* NORM PROVAN (1951-65)

Played in 10 of St George's historic run of 11 premiership wins - including four as captain-coach. Played 256 first-grade games and his image is seen on the NRL premiership trophy along with Arthur Summons.

* RON COOTE (1964-78)

The "prince of locks" was a World Cup-winning captain and played in nine grand finals in 11 seasons. His defection from South Sydney to Eastern Suburbs damaged relations between the traditional rivals.

* DUNCAN HALL (1945-52, 1954-57)

One of the game's all-time great front-rowers. Played his club career in Queensland with the Fortitude Valley Diehards and Western Suburbs.

* KEVIN IRVINE (1958-73)

His record of 212 tries in premiership matches may never be beaten. Considered one of the game's greatest ever wingers - and possibly the fastest as well. After leaving North Sydney, he won two premierships with Manly.

* MAL MENINGA (1979-94)

After winning two Brisbane premierships with Souths, took Canberra to three titles. The only player to go on four Kangaroo Tours with Australia.

* DARREN LOCKYER (1995-2011)

When he retired he held the record for most premiership matches (355) and most Origins (36). Still holds the record for most Test appearances (59). Won the Golden Boot playing at fullback and five-eighth.
