A look back at 2012 in Afghanistan

The UN estimates over 3,000 civilians died in Afghanistan in the first six months of 2012 alone. Meanwhile, 3,000 coalition soldiers died there this year.

More than 50 members of the NATO-led force there have been killed in insider attacks this year. In total, more than 3,000 coalition troops have lost their lives.

Tracking non-military deaths is much more difficult. But in the first six months alone, the UN estimates over 3,000 civilians also died.

We take a look at the year that was in Afghanistan.
