The federal government says a new deal struck with the aviation industry will make it mandatory for Australian airlines to have two crew members in the cockpit of a plane at all times.

The agreement follows revelations the pilot of a Germanwings plane, which is believed to have been deliberately crashed into the French Alps, was locked out of the cockpit by his co-pilot.

Transport Minister Warren Truss says domestic and international airlines will have to comply with the new rule immediately.

Mark is a commercial pilot who's operated planes for 10 years, and who wishes to remain anonymous.

He spoke with Lisa Upton about the new cockpit rules.
