The Australian dollar has risen one third of a US cent after the release of strong jobs figures.

The unemployment rate fell to 6.2 per cent in August, from 6.3 per cent in July, while the number of people with jobs rose by 17,400 in the month, more than economists' expectations of a 6,000 gain.

The Australian dollar jumped to 69.85 US cents at 1132 AEST, from 69.50 US cents just before the jobs numbers were released at 1130 AEST, before easing back to around 69.70 US cents by 1139 AEST.
