$A rises after employment figures

The Australian dollar jumped higher against the US dollar after local data showed the unemployment rate rose to 6.3 per cent in July, before falling back.

The Australian dollar has risen more than a third of a US cent after the release of weak employment figures.

The unemployment rate rose to 6.3 per cent in July, and the number of people with jobs lifted 38,500 in the month, better than market expectations of a 10,000 gain.

The Australian dollar jumped to 73.88 US cents at 1130 AEST, from 73.54 US cents just before the jobs numbers were released, before falling back to 73.40 US cents at 1140 AEST.
