$A rises on strong economic growth

The Australian dollar has risen more than a third of a US cent after the release of stronger-than-expected economic growth figures.

Australia's economy grew by 0.9 per cent in the March quarter, and by 2.3 per cent in the 12 months to March.

That was above expectations of growth of 0.5 per cent for the quarter and an annual rate of 1.8 per cent, according to an AAP survey of 12 economists.

At 1134 AEST the Australian dollar was trading at 78.11 US cents, up from 77.69 US cents before the data was released.
