$A soars on jobs figures

The Australian dollar has surged above 82 US cents due to stronger-than-expected jobs figures released by the ABS.

The Australian dollar has soared on a surprise fall in the unemployment rate caused by a surge in full time jobs.

The local currency was worth 82.02 US cents shortly after the data were released at 1130 AEDT on Thursday, up from 81.48 cents just before.

The unemployment rate fell to 6.1 per cent in December, from a revised 6.2 per cent in November.

The total number of people with full-time jobs rose by 41,600 to 8.105 million in December, and total employment rose by 37,400 to 11.679 million, much better than what economists had expected.
