AA welcomes WADA probe

Athletics Australia has welcomed the move by the World Anti-Doping Agency to probe new allegations of widespread doping in international track and field.

Athletics Australia has supported the move by the World Anti-Doping Agency to investigate new allegations of systemic illegal drug use in track and field.

German broadcaster ARD and The Sunday Times newspaper in Britain say that International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) files obtained from a whistleblower show that one-third of medals won in endurance races at the Olympics and world championships over a 10-year period were won by athletes who recorded suspicious doping tests.

"The contents of the articles is alarming," AA said in a statement on Monday.

"Athletics Australia is currently working to ascertain further information about the alleged leaked IAAF test reports that have been obtained to form the basis of the articles.

"The accusations made must be properly investigated. We welcome the World Anti-Doping Agency's decision to probe the allegations made."

The allegations come less than three weeks before the start of the biennial athletics world championships in Beijing.

Australian Olympic Committee president John Coates also backed WADA's response to the allegations.

"The latest allegations are disturbing and I welcome the announcement that they will form part of the current investigation being conducted into track and field," Coates said in a statement.

"The AOC has a zero tolerance approach to doping in sport."
