Abbott addresses defence planning talks

Prime Minister Tony Abbott says the first law of defence planning is to expect the unexpected and Australia needs to be ready to participate globally.

Australia needs a military capable of contributing to operations around the globe because it has interests all over the world, Tony Abbott says.

The prime minister has told the Australian Strategic Policy Institute the first law of defence planning was to expect the unexpected.

"A serious country needs capable armed forces to defend its citizens, to advance its interests and uphold its values around the world," Mr Abbott told the institute's conference in Canberra on Thursday.
