Prime Minister Tony Abbott says he and deputy Julie Bishop will be opposing a spill motion to be put to the Liberal party room on Tuesday.
Mr Abbott held a brief media conference in Sydney on Friday to comment on a move by West Australian Liberal MPs Luke Simpkins and Don Randall to bring a leadership spill motion to the party room on Tuesday morning.
"We are not the Labor Party and we are not going to repeat the chaos and the instability of the Labor years," he said.
"So I have spoken to deputy leader Julie Bishop and we will stand together in urging the party room to defeat this particular motion and in so doing, and in defeating this motion, to vote in favour of the stability and the team that the people voted for at the election."
Ms Bishop, in a statement provided to Sky News, said she would oppose the spill motion "due to cabinet solidarity and her position as deputy leader".
