Prime Minster Tony Abbott is confident that jobs growth will accelerate because of the government's confidence-building budget.

Mr Abbott was responding to a question from Opposition Leader Bill Shorten asking why, if the budget was one for jobs, it forecasts unemployment rising to a 14-year high of 6.5 per cent.

"Jobs growth should accelerate in the months ahead because this is a budget for confidence ... (Labor) want to talk doom, talk gloom, talk our economy down and try to block the measures that this government is putting in place to boost the economy of our country," Mr Abbott told parliament on Monday.
