Abbott confirms normal Anzac security

Tony Abbott says normal security plans are in place after reports Australian spies have been sent into Turkey before Anzac Day commemorations.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott insists normal security precautions are in place for Anzac centenary commemorations at Gallipoli.

But he will not confirm reports Australian spies and special forces personnel have been sent to Turkey amid fears of a terrorist attack at commemorations in April, saying appropriate security measures for an international event of this scale have been taken.

"It's the biggest commemorative event that we've ever really had," Mr Abbott told reporters at RAAF Base Amberley on Friday.

Australian spy agencies ASIO and ASIS, along with the Australian Federal Police, have been dispatched to Turkey, News Corp Australia reports, and the Turkish government is aware of their presence in the country.

The increase in security is thought to be an effort to guard against a potential attack by terrorist groups, including Islamic State.
