Tony Abbott says Australia's position on the death penalty is well known to Indonesia as the government makes last-ditch representations to save Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran from execution.

The Bali Nine pair lost a legal challenge against their clemency rejections earlier in the week.

The prime minister told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday he's had a number of conversations with Indonesian president Joko Widodo about the case and "everyone knows Australia's position on the death penalty".
