She may not have often gained the Coalition's support in parliament, but former Prime Minister Julia Gillard has notched up a win with the Abbott government pledging $140 million to her global education fund.
The Global Partnership for Education headed by Ms Gillard helps children in about 60 developing countries go to school.
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced the funds this morning, saying education was a key pillar of the government's new foreign aid policy framework.
"Our continuing support reflects the government's view that education is fundamental to human development and economic growth," she said in a statement.
Ms Gillard has welcomed the donations from various bodies overnight.
"This exceptional result is a vote of confidence in the power of education to lift the lives of millions of children, and is a tribute to far-sighted leadership in our partner countries," she said in a statement.
" No other organisation has a partnership structure that has leveraged such substantial funds from developing countries. The Global Partnership for Education provides the long term, systemic support that governments need to build stable, effective education systems."
