Immigration Minister Peter Dutton is backing Tony Abbott from a leadership challenge by Malcolm Turnbull.

"I believe very strongly that Tony Abbott has the ability to beat Bill Shorten at the next election," he told Sky News ahead of a Liberal partyroom meeting on Monday evening.

Mr Dutton confirmed his cabinet colleague Scott Morrison would not be standing for any leadership position.

Mr Dutton later told reporters he thinks the numbers in the ballot will be "tight".

He insisted Mr Abbott did not offer him any inducement in return for his support.
