Abbott hits poor and helps rich, says ACTU

Rich retirees should pay more tax on their super, say unions.

The Abbott government is being accused of attacking the retirement savings of ordinary Australians while bolstering the superannuation of the rich.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) has lashed out at a decision to dump a proposed tax on superannuation accounts earning more than $100,000.

The move comes on top of coalition plans to scrap super tax concessions for workers on less than $37,000 a year, which the ACTU said would leave millions worse off in retirement.

"The Abbott government is attacking ordinary workers ability to have a decent and secure retirement while bringing back tax breaks for the rich," ACTU president Ged Kearney said in a statement.

"It is not unreasonable to expect that the wealthiest retirees pay some tax on their superannuation income, when they are earning far above the average wage."
