Former prime minister John Howard says the greatest achievement of Tony Abbott's first year in office has been to restore common sense to economic management.

This weekend marks 12 months since the Liberal-Nationals coalition defeated Labor at the federal election.

"What the government has done is restored common sense to the economic management of this country," Mr Howard said in Canberra on Wednesday.

"It's reminded us of that age-old reality that whether it is a household or a nation we've got to live within our means."

Mr Howard said the border protection policy had been a "stunning success" and had rectified the damage done to the system by Labor.

In foreign affairs, minister Julie Bishop and Mr Abbott had "continued to cement our links with our near neighbours".

"We have also projected Australia in other parts of the world which rebounds to our credit."

Mr Howard was attending the launch of a new exhibition at Old Parliament House which he has curated on the first Menzies government of 1939-41.
