Prime Minister Tony Abbott should sack Bronwyn Bishop and appoint a new Speaker, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has demanded.

Mr Shorten said the "soap opera" over Mrs Bishop's use of taxpayer-funded travel claims had to end.

"Put simply Mr Abbott has to act - Bronwyn Bishop has to go," he told reporters in Melbourne, adding that Queensland MP Bruce Scott should be appointed in her place.
