A Liberal backbencher insists it was a mistake for the Abbott government to remove the nation's credit limit.

Eric Abetz has flagged he'll introduce a private members bill to reintroduce the measure.

"We've seen Labor, the Greens and the Senate crossbench vote down budget repair measures and effectively stop the government from being able to return the budget to surplus and to start paying off the debt," Senator Abetz said.

"We owe it to our children to leave a positive legacy rather than a millstone of debt."

The coalition government secured a deal with the Australian Greens to scrap the $300 billion debt ceiling in late 2013.
