Gary Ablett is set to sign a three-year contract extension with AFL club Gold Coast as soon as this week.

Another deal, worth $1 million per season, would keep Ablett at the Suns until the end of the 2018 season.

The 30-year-old dual Brownlow medallist was widely expected to remain on the Gold Coast, despite speculation regarding a return to Geelong.

"All along we've said that we're confident that, that was going to happen," said Suns coach Rodney Eade.

"There's been a few little crinkles here and there that we've had to iron out but fingers crossed, we think it shouldn't be too far away."

Ablett missed Sunday's narrow nine-point loss to Geelong due to his ongoing shoulder complaint.
