Ablett still has many years in him: Evans

Gold Coast CEO Mark Evans says recent performances by the Suns' inaugural captain prove he has the ability to play on in the AFL beyond 2017.

Never write off a champion, particularly one as resilient as Gold Coast's Gary Ablett.

That's the view of the Suns' chief executive, Mark Evans, who says Ablett's recent form shows the midfielder has plenty of AFL football ahead of him.

Ablett's future has been under increasing scrutiny after the dual Brownlow Medallist requested a move back to Geelong late last year then suggested personal reasons could lead to his retirement at the end of 2017.

Evans does not appear concerned however, saying the ex-captain's performances don't suggest he is winding down his career.

"Gary's response to the pressure he was put under publicly after round two was nothing short of outstanding and it's reminded us of exactly the sort of player he's been throughout his career," Evans said.

"If he keeps playing like that he'll have more than one year ahead of him, that's for sure.

Ablett's contract at the Suns finishes at the end of 2018 and he has ruled out discussing any trade options until the end of the current season.

Gold Coast co-captain Tom Lynch says Ablett's ability to bounce back from a poor game against Greater Western Sydney impressed the Suns' young squad.

"It shows what a great champion he is," Lynch said.

"He's copped criticism, he hasn't dropped his head or done anything like that ... he's bounced back sensationally."

Ablett recorded 45 disposals and 27 contested possessions in last round's loss to North Melbourne but faces a tough task this week in Geelong midfield pair Joel Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield.

The Cats' trip to Metricon will be the first time Ablett has faced his old club since his trade request.
