A Queensland fruit store has come under fire after posting on Instagram a drawing of gradually ripening avocados and labelling the dark, overripe ones "abocados".

Amid accusations of racism, Charlie's Fruit Market owner Johnny Tabet apologised on social media, saying the cartoon was a "typo" and not intended as a slur on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

"There is no way we would ever, EVER put up a racist joke," he wrote.

"We are not trying to cover up or hide anything. Racism is unacceptable! This was never meant to be a joke about the wonderful original owners of this land but a joke about how quickly avocados turn black."

According to the store, the sentence should have been: "Love our Avocados... hate our Avocados."
