In north-eastern New South Wales, a group of local Gomeroi people are imploring the federal government to make a mining company halt work they say will damage ancestors' graves.

The Gomeroi have written to Environment Minister Greg Hunt, seeking a temporary stop-work order for Whitehaven Coal's Maules Creek coal-mine project.

Whitehaven has said it held formal consultations with a number of local Aboriginal representatives and continues to do so, but the Aboriginal community is divided on the issue.

Gomeroi man Stephen Talbott tells Ron Sutton the true elders of the area have been ignored and want help under the heritage protection legislation.
