A teenage father accused of fatally assaulting his premature infant son has appeared briefly in the Perth Children's Court.

The 15-year-old is accused of assaulting his month-old son at Bunbury Regional Hospital, south of Perth, on February 15, leaving the baby with life-threatening head injuries.

The infant died just over a week later in the arms of his 16-year-old mother.

The teenager appeared in court via video link from Banksia Hill Detention Centre on Friday charged with grievous bodily harm but did not plead to the charge or apply for bail.

The matter was adjourned until April 1.
