Accused may face unborn murder charge

A Gold Coast man accused of killing a pregnant woman during a domestic dispute on Monday could also be charged with the baby's death.

A Gold Coast man accused of murdering a pregnant woman will also likely be charged with the unborn baby's death.

Fabiana Palhares, 34, was discovered with severe head injuries at her Varsity Lakes home on Monday afternoon.

Ms Palhares, believed to be 10 weeks pregnant, was reportedly struck with an axe.

She was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital but died later that day.

Brock Wall, 34, was arrested near Ms Palhares' home in bloody clothing shortly after police arrived at the scene.

He has been charged with murder and breaching a domestic violence order.

Wall didn't appear during a brief mention of his case at Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday, with his lawyer Vered Turner saying she had authority to handle the matter without her client's presence.

Prosecutor Donna Minns said Wall would likely also be charged with the baby's death, and argued for an extension to the disclosure of evidence deadline.

"There is an extensive crime scene and it could possibly be weeks to conclude the investigation," Ms Minns told the court.

A Brazilian who had been living on the Gold Coast for several years, Ms Palhares was described as friendly and quick with a smile by her neighbours.

"We had just moved in, but she was always lovely - a beautiful person," neighbour Patti Kapi told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

Wall has been remanded in custody and the matter has been adjourned until May 22 for a committal mention.
