Accused terror teen remanded in custody

A Melbourne teenager facing terror charges has been remanded in custody.

A Melbourne teenager who allegedly had bomb-making manuals and explosives in his bedroom will remain in custody.

The 17-year-old did not appear in the Children's Court on Monday but was remanded in custody until September 7 when he will return to the same court for a committal mention.

He is accused of planning to commit a terrorist attack, possessing things connected with a terrorist act, and failing to provide a password after a police raid on his Melbourne home on May 8.

Due to his age, the matter must return to court every 21 days while he is on remand.

If he is ordered to stand trial, the teen will face a charge that carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Because that goes beyond the Children's Court jurisdiction, which imposes a maximum three-year sentence, the case would be heard in the Victorian Supreme Court.
