A member of ACT police is being investigated for retweeting pornographic photos on the organisation's official Twitter account.

ACT Policing was left red-faced after its account on New Year's Eve promoted a tweet by "Katie Sanders", showing photos of a naked woman with the hashtag #ThonglessThursday.

Police deleted the nude photos from the feed and apologised.

It has since clarified the "unintentional error" was made a member who was outside the police media team.

Police are also reviewing their social media protocols.

"I can assure the Canberra community that our Twitter account is safe," ACT Chief Police Officer Rudi Lammers said.
