Canberra has opened its arms to refugees.

The city that is, not necessarily federal parliament.

The ACT government has signed up to declare the nation's capital a "refugee welcome zone" as it marks Refugee Week.

The declaration is a commitment in spirit to welcoming refugees into the community, looking after their human rights, and enhancing diversity.

More than 100 local governments have signed up to the Refugee Council of Australia initiative and promised to make refugees welcome in their region.
