An investigation by the Fair Work Ombudsman has discovered that almost a quarter of businesses randomly audited were paying apprentices below the minimum wage.
Out of the 142 businesses assessed in the Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia, more than half breached workplace laws.
The President of the Australia Council of Trade Unions, Ged Kearney says low wages are in part responsible for a high drop out rate among apprentices.
Ged Kearney told Thisanka Siripala that the most alarming aspect of the investigation is how widespread the trend has become.
