Adam Scott finds form at pre-US Open event

Australian golfer Adam Scott has finished in an eight-way tie for 10th at the St Jude Classic PGA Tour event in Memphis.

Adam Scott has gained a crucial confidence boost ahead of this week's US Open by surging up the leaderboard in the final round of the St Jude Classic in Memphis.

The Australian shot a two-under-par 68 to finish the US PGA tournament at six under in an eight-way tie for 10th, firing four birdies on Sunday to go with two bogeys.

He was four shots behind American Daniel Berger, who successfully defended his title thanks to his second straight 66 in the final round.

Scott's tournament highlight was a six-under 64 second round which included an eagle on the par-five 16th on Friday.

But the former world No.1 followed it up with a disappointing one-over third round to head into the final day in a tie for 22nd.

Compatriot Matt Jones, 37, faded out of contention with a find-round 72, claiming equal-18th place with five under for the tournament.

Jones started Sunday's round in the hunt for second US PGA tour win at two shots off the lead and tied sixth.

But he faltered with bogeys on the fifth and seventh after finding the left-hand rough on each off the tee, before recording a double bogey on the par-four 12th hole.

Berger shot a bogey-free four-under par to emerge on top of a crowded leaderboard at TPC Southwind, finishing at 10-under 270 for the tournament.

"I'm one-for-one defending titles, so that's a pretty good stat," said Berger, who claimed his first and previously only PGA tour victory at last year's St Jude Classic.

"We hear a lot about the young guns and about the Justin Thomases and Jordan Spieths, but I feel like I kind of get forgotten a little bit.

"I'm pretty good, so I'm just going to try and keep doing my thing and see if I can't get a few more."

South African Charl Schwartzel and Whee Kim of South Korea were a shot behind.

A birdie on the 15th saw Berger move clear of the pack, which at one point included nine players tied for the lead.

Spaniard Rafael Cabrera Bello, joint overnight leader, finished a tie for fourth with Billy Horschel, Braden Thornberry, Chez Reavie and Kevin Chappell.

Phil Mickelson, a six-time US Open runner-up, was a shot behind Scott at seven under.

The US Open kicks off at Erin Hills in Wisconsin on Thursday.
