An Adelaide lawyer is travelling to Iraq to help process refugees fleeing the Syrian conflict.

Legal Services Commission solicitor John Mwate will take up a senior role later this month with the UNHCR to help process some of the 250,000 refugees who have fled Syria to the northern Kurdish region of Iraq.

"In addition to needing life sustaining humanitarian assistance and legal protection, displaced people are sometimes deprived of their housing and property rights," Mr Mwate said.

"This hinders their return to their homes."

Mr Mwate has worked for the Legal Services Commission for six years and served a previous stint with the UN in Iraq from 2013 to 2015.
