A man has denied killing a Sydney sex worker whose body was found in an Adelaide hotel room.

Chungaung Piao, 28, is charged with murdering 25-year-old Tina Fang, who was found dead in a room at the Grand Chancellor Hotel in the city centre on New Year's Day this year.

Ms Fang was found with her neck cut and other severe injuries.

Piao, a Chinese national from Allenby Gardens in Adelaide, pleaded not guilty in the South Australian Supreme Court on Monday.

A court previously heard Piao had been living in Australia for four years and was married with a young son.

He will return to the Supreme Court on October 2 for a directions hearing.
