Adelaide Thunderbirds' all-time leading scorer Carla Borrego says a knee injury has prompted her to retire from netball.
The 32-year-old Borrego, who is seventh on the list of all-time scorers in the trans-Tasman competition, will quit after Sunday's match against Mainland Tactix in Adelaide.
"I'm about to have my third knee operation in seven months and my body is telling me it's time to slow down," Borrego said in a statement on Wednesday.
Jamaican-born Borrego has missed the past three matches because of the injury and Adelaide will finish last in the competition this season regardless of Sunday's result.
"It has been tough because I know I'm able to compete at the highest level and still be a threat," Borrego said.
"However, the knee has not been at its best so I think the time is right to focus on something else and to get the knee right."
A former US college basketballer who played for Jamaica at the 2003 world netball championships, Borrego's reach and uncanny shooting accuracy made her a dominant force.
She played integral roles in Adelaide's 2010 and 2013 trans-Tasman titles and has 2870 career goals in the championship.
